Requested by Glazed Smooth too long ago, here's the Overture to Offenbach's biggest hit, Orpheus in the Underworld, with instruments from the Pokémon DPP soundfont. The overture to Orpheus in the Underworld is largely episodic in nature, being easily able to be divided into separate sections. It bursts into the scene quite noisily, the full orchestra accompanied by strong Timpani drumrolls. The mood is largely playful. Festivities die down quite soon, however, and before we know it there's only a single clarinet left playing (0:44). After some wandering, it is joined by a slightly melancholic companion (1:14). These both serve as a quirky transition to a very pleasant episode in triple meter (1:33). There's something about this music that sounds somewhat Wagner-like to me. After this episode's conclusion, the orchestra gives loud signs of trouble brewing (3:03), leading to another "wandering transition", this time starring a violin (3:24). The ensuing episode this time is a charming waltz with a beautiful melody (4:04). After a full presentation of said melody, the dance picks up speed and becomes more lively (5:06) building up to a startlingly strong climax (5:28). After that, the waltz's main melody is given a grand reprise (5:47) and a softer conclusion soon afterward (6:15). Now, this would seem like the ending of the piece, and it would be a quite satisfying and adequate one at that. Instead, we're given one last treat (6:36), and what a treat it is! This is the world-famous Infernal Galop, more commonly referred to as the "Can-Can". This music is so well-known that it probably doesn't need any description at all, but I will say that it certainly serves as a bombastic, exhilarating, and supremely catchy finale to this overture.
