While the children are hunkered down with the beavers, Mr Beaver tells the children more about Aslan and their own role in saving Narnia. We learn that Aslan is a lion. He's not safe, but he is good. Getting a little more philosophical this week, we consider whether something that isn't safe can be good. What do you think? Can you think of something which isn't necessarily safe but is good? We consider the sun and sea in this context, and we apply this understanding to Aslan. We also consider why the children aren't fazed by the responsibility placed on them to save Narnia. They are only children! However, could the very name, Aslan, and the extraordinary feelings it engenders in the children have something to do with it? We notice how the children's sense of themselves is amplified on hearing his name: Peter - already brave - feels brave; Susan - more cautious is comforted; Lucy - full of hope and excitement - feels immense freedom and joy, and in this way, their calling feels natural, a certain destiny. We examine in what way - aside from being human - the children are well suited to royal responsibilities. What do you think? Finally, we look at the meaning of 'stratagem' within the context of the sentence and its similarity to the word 'strategy;. What is your prediction for Chapter 9. Go on, grab a listening ear and practise talking aloud.
