On my last night in Chengdu, China, I found myself sharing iftar with a group of international students from Tajikistan—an invite that came from a chance encounter. I arrived late to iftar at the mosque, and while grabbing some tea, I bumped into Talib, a young man from Tajikistan. We got talking, he introduced me to the rest of the crew, and even though he had already eaten, we sat down for another iftar together. But that wasn’t the end of it. Talib invited me to a special iftar the next day with his friends at their apartment. That night, I got to experience true hospitality and even try Qurutob, the national dish of Tajikistan.
