Preparation of Reinecke's salt

Procedure: 10 g of ammonium thiocyanate was taken into an evaporating dish and while stirring with a glass rod, it was heated on a sand bath until the salt completely fused at 140-150°C. Then 1.7 g of ammonium dichromate (powdered) was added to the surface of the melt in small portion. The melt was stirred well after each addition. During early part of the mixing, the temperature will be raised spontaneously to about 160°C and the external heating will be discontinued. The deep purple coloured melt was allowed to cool and solidify in desiccators. The solid was quickly broken up with the aid of a metal spatula and transferred to a beaker containing about 10 g of ice. The red precipitate was then filtered. Report yield.
