"The Most Important Person" was a series of 66 short subjects for children that related, through animation, live-action, and music, important topics in a youngster's life. The subjects in this series dealt with, for example, dental health, friendship, trying new things, making mistakes, and caring for others. There was a group of animated children that was regularly featured, among them Mike, a boy who always wore a baseball cap; Cindy, a red-haired girl (also called Nancy in a few of the shorts); Nicola, an African-American girl who wore beaded pigtails; and Pablo, a Mexican boy. There was also Fumble, a green, ostrich-like bird; Hairy, a short, furry caveman-like creature; and Bird, who talked fast and was very excited. These shorts were originally shown as interstitial segments on "Captain Kangaroo," introduced by the Captain (Bob Keeshan) and members of his cast. Four years later, Viacom (and, 19 years after that, Paramount Television) syndicated the shorts to local stations, running either as half-hour editions made up of five shorts, or as interstitial segments of locally-produced children's programs (some PBS affiliates even ran "The Most Important Person" as short subjects between weekday children's shows). These shorts were made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education (then known as the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare), Office of Child Development. John Sutherland is the director of the production company. Dan Weisburd directed the audio recording and did the voice of the big green bird, as well as writing the scripts. Various professional animation directors did the actual directing. The most talented contributor was Elaine Simone (Mrs. D. Weisburd) who wrote all the songs, not to mention the wonderful music for another Sutherland series: thirty-six, six minute animated films for "Project Bilingual", intended for Mexican American kids in kindergarten and first grade. 16mm film to digital transfer by Gerald Santana
