For a long while, I thought a song was made of melody and words. Now I know better. My song is made of people. It’s made of love given, love received, and grace that carried me farther than I ever deserved to go. The first verse of my song is Amy. She doesn’t know it, but she is. Her love has been steady—especially when life wasn’t. She has walked with me through uncertainty, through seasons when the road ahead wasn’t clear, and she never asked me to be anyone other than faithful and present. She has been my reminder that love doesn’t need to be loud to be powerful. It just needs to be faithful. Her presence has shaped my life more than she’ll ever know. The second verse belongs to Peanut and Punkin. Peanut carries the heart of a rescue, and somehow, he understands mine. He loves fiercely, protects instinctively, and rests fully once he knows he’s safe. Watching him reminds me what it means to be chosen and healed by love. Punkin is loyalty in its purest form. Where I go, he goes. No questions. No conditions. His steady presence has taught me that love doesn’t need words—it just needs to stay. They’re part of my song in ways I never expected, but couldn’t imagine life without. Another verse of my song belongs to my mom and dad. They gave me more than life—they gave me roots. They taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and standing firm when life gets difficult. Through their example, I learned strength, sacrifice, and what it looks like to keep showing up. So much of who I am today began with what they poured into me. Their love and guidance were some of the first notes ever written into my life. There’s also a verse for my brother and sister. We share a history only we truly understand. They’ve walked beside me through laughter, disagreements, and seasons that shaped us all. They remind me where I came from—and keep me grounded in who I’m meant to be. Then the song grows deeper with my children. They changed me forever. They taught me what real responsibility looks like, and what it means to love someone more than myself. Watching them grow has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. And now, my grandchildren have added a new harmony to the song. They are joy wrapped in wonder. Their laughter, curiosity, and innocence remind me to slow down and see life with grateful eyes. They are proof that God’s blessings continue, generation after generation. My song also carries gratitude for family, friends, and loved ones God has placed along my path—each one adding a note, a harmony, or a season to the music of my life. And above every verse, above every blessing, stands Jesus Christ. When I look back over my life, I see His faithfulness woven through every chapter. Through the good and the hard, through moments I didn’t understand, He never left. He carried me, corrected me, forgave me, and called me forward. I don’t sing because my life has been perfect. I sing because His grace has been. One day, in a quiet moment of reflection, I realized something: My life is the song. Every relationship is a verse. Every lesson is a line. Every blessing is a chorus of thanksgiving. So I keep singing—not just with my voice, but with the way I live. With the way I love my wife. With the way I care for the lives entrusted to me. With the way I honor my family. With the way I trust my Savior. This is Joseph’s Song. And as long as I have breath, it will be a song of gratitude, offered back to the One who gave me everything.
