A jailbreak is in similar to a phone, its breaks the internals of the ECU allowing you to be able to tune a car. HONDATA requires all TypeR and Type S ECU to be jail broken prior to being able to utilizing there tuning product. Once its broken the software offers user friendly interface allowing you to tune your cars easily with very safe parements, if you are seeking something more than just a base tune and safer, I would definetly recommend a custom tune on dyno or street dyno to run 100% safe based off your car. Although the ecu is smart enough to handle a base hondata tune, not every car is 100% identical reason of going with custom. If you want to order hondata would highly recommend coming to one of these events than to risk shipping your ecu via mail and maybe losing it.
