On a mostly VFR day—based on the reports and forecasts in my preflight briefing—I set out from Boeing Field (KBFI) to fly a practice RNAV approach under VFR at Olympia, WA (KOLM) southwest of Seattle. But as I headed to the initial approach fix where I wanted to start the approach, a few low clouds north of Olympia suggested I wouldn’t be able to remain VFR along final. So I dawdled in VMC southwest of Bremerton and filed an IFR flight plan through ForeFlight on my phone. Waited a couple minutes after receiving the confirmation message, and then, as you’ll see in this video, called Seattle Approach to get my clearance in the air. You can’t always pick up an IFR clearance in the air—sometimes the controllers are just too busy. But having an IFR flight plan on file—instead of asking for a pop-up clearance—makes ATC’s job easier. If you file before calling ATC, the essential information about your aircraft, the route you want to fly, and other details are in the system, so the controller usually needs to provide only a transponder code, confirm your altitude, and then issue a route. The plan for this flight was to fly the RNAV (GPS) RWY 17 approach at KOLM to a full stop and then depart VFR back to Boeing Field. I loaded the approach starting at the WONKU initial approach fix so that I could follow the published segments of this basic “T” configuration to the runway. No vectors needed after joining the procedure. Enjoy the flight.
