Gutter guards are typically sold and installed during warmer months -- spring to late fall. In most parts of the country that get snow, it's often limited to 3-4 months of the year, if not a shorter window, so the bulk of the year is free of snow and ice. For the period of time in which snow and ice is present, how will gutter guards perform in these conditions? In Episode 14, we take a look at the gutter guards with anywhere from 2-4 inches of snow on the garage roof. You'll see that the gutter guards behave similarly. With or without debris on top of the gutter covers, water drips from the bottom of the gutter or from a drip edge, if present, on most of the systems. What's interesting, and important to note, a gutter cover will more easily cause water to drip from the gutter than an open gutter. Why? Because the gutter guards are preventing snow and ice from getting inside the gutters. Gutter guards keep the gutters free-flowing, and the snow builds up on top of the gutter covers. While water drains into the gutters, some water will drip over the tops of the gutter protectors. That's just the way it is. We have written several articles about snow and ice dams on our blog. You can read more about this phenomenon at https://www.gutterguardsdirect.com/gu.... The good news is that gutter guards don't cause ice dams. In fact, they may help prevent them. There wasn't enough snow in this week's test to see how the gutters would respond over an extended period of time, but it'll show you what your gutters may look like shortly after it snows. The gutter covers that did the best job minimizing dripping from the bottom of the gutters this week were: 1. LeafFilter 2. MasterShield 3.
