Alfie Kohn is an American author and lecturer in the areas of education, parenting, and human behavior. He is a proponent of progressive education and has offered critiques of many traditional aspects of parenting, managing, and American society more generally, drawing in each case from social science research. In this interview we talk about intrinsic motivation vs extrinsic motivation - define behaviorism and why it doesn't work with humans (spoiler alert, humans are complicated, and there is not a one size fits all solution to getting someone to do what you want...). Mr. Kohn questions why we should be trying to control others in the first place. He asks us to take a deep look at why we are doing the things we do and how we want to see the world. His research argues that rewards and punishments are the same - and are quick and easy but only offer temporary compliance, not genuine interest and enjoyment.
