Located in the county of Cornwall, and around 12 miles north of Truro, is the town of Newquay. During the medieval era, the area associated with the Newquay of today was a small fishing village named Towan Blystra ('Towan' meaning sandhill or dune in Cornish, and 'Blystra' meaning blown). In 1439 a local governing body submitted plans to the local burgesses who then applied to Edmund Lacey the Bishop of Exeter for funding to build a 'new quay'. By the 1750s, Newquay had a thriving pilchard fishing industry. This remained the case until around the late 19th century. However, it was the arrival of the railway that transformed it from a small fishing village to a popular seaside town. The station in question opened in 1876 and is today the northwestern terminus of the Atlantic Coast Line, which connects to Par Station on the Cornish Main Line. In 1962 Newquay Airport, alternatively known as Cornwall Airport Newquay, opened. Located around four miles northeast of the town centre, this offers both domestic flights to destinations such as London Gatwick, Manchester and Edinburgh, and international flights to destinations including Zurich, Malaga and Copenhagen. To this day, Newquay remains a popular seaside resort, and is regarded as the surfing capital of the UK. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
