During World War 2, when the men went off to fight in Europe and the South Pacific,1,830 adventurous young women from small towns and big cities across America joined a secret, experimental military program run by the Army Air Forces. They became the United State's first women pilots (The WASP--Women Airforce Service Pilots) at a time when women were not considered to be equal to men. The program was disbanded at the end of 1944 when the male pilots began to return from overseas, The women were sent home without the militarization and military benefits they had been promised, and for the next 65 years the United States government chose to ignore the existence of their first women pilots.
