In this tasing I follow up a tasting from a few weeks ago where I was hugely impressed by the value for money offered by Bodegas Castano's Yecla Monastrell 2022. The wine I'm looking at here is a 'barrica" (i.e. oak aged version) of then same variety - Bodegas Castano Barrica Monastrell, Yecla 2019. Again this is arelatively inexpensive wine, but it provedes to be a really good example of the variety and to be well made and to offer pretty good complexity, all at a very reasonable price. Bodegas Castaño are highly respected wine producer from the Yecla wine producing zone of southern Spain. It has long been associated with the Monastrell grape variety, and is often given credit for reviving the fortune of both Monastrell and the Yecla wine-producing region's reputation. The bodegas began in the early 1950s, when Ramón Castaño built a winery in the area. At the time, winemaking had been largely forgotten in Yecla following the spread of phylloxera, and Monastrell was used to make uninspiring bulk wines. During the 1980s, Castaño focused on producing high-quality, bottled Monastrell wines, opening the door for other producers in the region to start using the grape. Ramon’s three children, Ramón, Juan Pedro and Daniel Castaño have all joined and now run the company. Ramon purchased further vineyards and extended their estate. Today, the bodegas owns more than 400 hectares (990 acres) of land in Yecla, split between four estates. They have two winemaking cellars, fully equipped with stainless steel tanks for a correct maceration process at controlled temperatures. And an underground oak barrel-ageing cellar with temperature and humidity control for their premium wines, and warehousing. Yecla lies 80 kilometes inland from the Mediterranean Sea in Southern Spain, Between Jumilla and Alicante. The location of the region marks the transition between coastal Mediterranean influences and the harsh continental climate of Spain's hot, arid interior. Rainfall is low, with less than 300mm a year on average. Thankfully, the limestone soils here efficiently store whatever rainfall the region is fortunate enough to receive. Altitude also serves to moderate temperatures here; the zone sits at the eastern edge of the Cordillera Subbética mountain range. Most Yecla vineyards sit between 400m and 800m ASL. The poor-quality limestone based soils are ideal terroir for stressing the vines just enough to produce grapes with concentrated sugar and phenolics.
