As journalists, we often fall back on tried and tested methods for telling our news stories and features, whether in text, video or audio. But sometimes it can feel like we’re stuck in a rut. Or perhaps the method we’re using simply isn’t working anymore – or is failing to tell our story in as effective or compelling a way as we want. In this two-hour masterclass, Paul Bradshaw uses latest examples – from immersive longform stories to the new genre of "scrollytelling" – and research to suggest new ways journalists can tell a story and impact their audiences. He'll show us that (gasp!) there is an alternative to the inverted pyramid, explain how we can do more showing and less telling, reveal the different choices we can take about the narrator of our stories, describe how some narrative structures can help us write stories or scripts quicker and better... and highlight how best to tell our stories on different platforms. Paul is an award-winning journalist and academic, best known for pioneering storytelling and journalism through data. He leads the MA in data, multiplatform and mobile journalism at Birmingham City University and and was the co-founder of Help Me Investigate, a collaborative investigations website funded by Channel 4 and Screen WM. This masterclass is brought to you by the Civic Journalism Lab in association with Newcastle University.
