Journalists regularly break big stories through freedom of information (FoI) requests - Jenna Corderoy of OpenDemocracy shows us how. Journalists regularly break big stories through freedom of information (FoI) requests – a right which exists in most European countries to ask government or public bodies for access to public documents. Requests often lead to stories the authorities would rather we didn't know. Stories with impact, stories that effect real change. But 20 years after the Freedom of Information Act was passed in the UK, some journalists still don’t use FoI at all. Many worry that it’s too complex, and that gathering stories using FoI legislation is beyond them. In this masterclass, Jenna Corderoy explains why this is wrong. Jenna is a journalist for openDemocracy’s UK investigations team. Last year she was nominated for a Paul Foot Award and a British Journalism Award for her work on investigations into funding of the Leave campaign by millionaire Arron Banks. She has also worked for VICE News as a researcher and writer. This masterclass is brought to you by the Civic Journalism Lab in association with Newcastle University.
