Diabetics face obstacles amid national insulin shortage; expert advice for coping

For diabetics, the proper insulin can be crucial to everyday life -- and recently, there have been shortages of various medications. Certain types of insulins have been entered in the FDA Shortage database, and it could impact more than you think. The last few weeks, company Eli Lilly announced two of its insulins will be out of stock through early April -- Humalog and Insulin Lispro -- making those who use insulin pumps the most vulnerable to the shortage. Edd Handley is a Type 2 diabetic who became worried after he noticed a delay in his medication. "Last month I was only able to obtain four insulin vials out of six,” he said. “Luckily, I had some after I had been in the hospital I was still catching up to. Now this month is a whole different story."
