Adolphe Ledhuy (also Le Dhuy, Le d'Huy) was born on August 12, 1803 in Coucy-le-Château (Région Hauts-de-France). Around 1820 he went to Paris, where he published several music theory works from 1830 until 1850. The most important and comprehensive was the "Encyclopédie pittoresque de la Musique", which he published in Paris in 1835 together with the well-known pianist and composer Henri Bertini (1798-1876). The work shows an amazing spirit of research. There are not only articles about the origins in Europe, such as Palestrina or Josquin des Prés, but also treatises on the music of the Hebrews, Arabs and Chinese. The most interesting for guitarists are the biographies and compositions of Dionisio Aguado and Fernando Sor, with whom Ledhuy was friends. He himself wrote a guitar school and numerous works for guitar. These include two sets of variations, a "Nocturne espagnol brillant" and two editions of studies. The piece recorded here is an arpeggio over five strings and has been slightly revised.
