Conic Hill is one of the most popular peaks of Scotland on par with Ben Nevis, The Cobbler or Arthur Seat. You can be always sure there will be a crowd on the top and it is important to start off early to make sure that there are parking spaces, despite the fact that the car park in Balmaha is really big. One of the reasons why this hill is so popular is the fact it is not far from Glasgow and Stirling, it is also quite short trail and easy to climb too. Since the path is currently under reconstruction, it is going to be even easier coming spring. Of course, it is important to stress that in winter parts of the trail is covered with ice and quite slippery, especially in the morning, so it can be tricky without proper footwear. Second reason for its popularity (maybe more important really) is the view. It is one of the most iconic views to the biggest lake of UK - Loch Lomond. Half way through the climb you can start to enjoy amazing vista of islands on the lake and peaks of Arrochar Alps on the other side of Loch Lomond. To your left you can see a massive peak of Ben Lomond which is located around 10 miles away along the bank of the lake. The higher you get, the better the view is. Conic Hill is not very high though with mere 361 meters, and even in winter (and with 8 yo girl) it takes less than 1.5 hour to reach the top. In summer it is probably closer to 1 hour and below. This is also a great place to practice before starting with more difficult peaks. Though it is not as high as other 'training' hills of Pentland or Ochil ranges, the view from the top is so much more rewarding. For me it was a first peak of this year, to start easy with getting rid of post-Christmas weight 😁.
