It had been awhile since I’d seen these guys when they departed in mid-January to close out their season with a load of iron ore. After arriving at around 6am, the barge Great Lakes Trader loaded at CN6 while her tug Joyce L VanEnkevort separated and refueled, one of the few times I’ve ever seen an ATB split up, unfortunately they were on the move only while I was working :(. She departed around 7pm with a salute so late they were past the lighthouses, well into the Lake and the Bridge was almost fully lowered! Maybe they almost forgot lol. The pair measures 840ft when combined, one of the largest non-thousand foot vessels on the lakes. Built in 1999 with a carrying capacity of 39,600 tons. She was a huge addition to the Great Lakes when constructed, there hadn’t been a new large ore carrier since the early 80s at the time, and a massive risk for her owners, VanEnkevort Tug and Barge, which sold off their entire fleet of smaller tugs to afford the massive ship. Fortunately the risk has paid off and she now features two sister ships as well, one built in 2012, the other in 2020. She currently runs a wide variety of cargos, one of busiest ships on the Lakes and while she was a common sight in early 2025 she disappeared from the harbor for several months and returned for this run. Hope you all enjoy!
