Hello again, Classical MIDI fans! Next up for us in Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4, "Italian" is the third movement, a minuet that feels almost transitional. Its form is relatively standard, with its flowing lines offering the musical equivalent of the symmetrical forms of the architecture that Mendelssohn explored during his stay in Rome. The introduction of the brass as melody in the trio sounds somewhat militaristic, and calls to mind the classical period of Rome, imaging armies marching through the cobbled streets fifteen hundred years prior. But to me the movement also sounds a bit transitional, leading one in a stately fashion towards the climactic finale, with its raucous Neapolitan dance motifs. Again, change is minimal in this performance in terms of the technical - just some subtle balance adjustments in both violin sections and the first bassoon. I also made some very minor adjustments to the EQ of the first bassoon, as I found the previous setting had a bit too much harshness in the upper register, as opposed to that subtle nasal quality that the instrument is famous for. I'm of two minds about the level within the mix of the violas, as well - are they too low, or do they provide enough support in the middle registers?
