Traditional Chinese education was divided into two parts: Xiaoxue and Daxue. In ancient times, they represented different stages of learning. Xiaoxue was the initial stage and Daxue was the advanced stage. Xiaoxue typically began in private homes, with students ranging in age from 5 or 6 to their teens. The main content included basic etiquette such as sweeping, responding to others, and proper conduct, supplemented by learning music, archery, chariot driving, calligraphy, and mathematics. Emphasis was placed on language learning and the formation of basic moral values; hence, it was said that Xiaoxue was about "teaching through practical experience." Textbooks like the "philological classics" ("Xen Gu") were characterized by concentrated character learning, rhythmic verses, broad knowledge base, practical application, and emphasis on moral education. From the Northern and Southern Dynasties(420—589) onward, the content we learn, such as the Three Character Classic and the *Thousand Character Classic*, has been widely adopted as systematic teaching materials. Through reading aloud, reciting, and memorizing, students ultimately achieve comprehension. Once they possess a solid foundation in understanding classical Chinese texts and articles, and have mastered the basics of character form, pronunciation, meaning, and punctuation, they can enter Daxue after completing Xiaoxue. Only then can they delve deeper into profound and philosophical classics like the Four Books, and ultimately pass examinations to enter officialdom. Therefore, most politicians in ancient China were polymaths, skilled in both literature and military affairs: civil officials not only possessed strategies for governing the country but were also capable of fighting on the battlefield; military generals not only wielded weapons but also wrote poetry to express their feelings, and almost all of them have left behind works that have been passed down through generations. ------------------- #three Character Classic #chineselanguage #Chinese classic #三字经 #中文 #BasicChinese #LearnChineseforBeginners #LearnMandarin #FreeChineseLessons #FreeMandarinChinese #LearnChineseOnline #BeginnerChineseLesson #FreeOnlineChineseLessons #BasicChineseCourses #easychinese #Chinese #LearnChinese #China #ChineseLanguage
