Rush's Geddy Lee wasn't lying when he sang "Show me, don't tell me." While plays get by on the strength of their dialogue, and yes, so do screenplays and pilots to a large extent, what really separates the wheat from the chaff is *visual storytelling. * Pros know that a picture is worth a thousand words, and they will always try to convey mood, attitude, and backstory visually rather than via dialogue whenever possible. Amateurs? Well, their default is to write everything in dialogue, usually in pretty on-the-nose fashion. The result is a screenplay or pilot that tells, rather than shows, and this can lead to a read that feels expository, talky, and leaden. Remember, folks, film and TV are visual mediums. Dialogue is just one storytelling tool in the screenwriter's quiver. Images are just as important. It's a good habit to review your scenes with an eye on transforming dialogue into visuals wherever possible. Instead of telling us something overtly, can we show it somehow? Old photos, paintings, thematic imagery, body language, subtext - all of these things can replace dialogue and land with much more impact. More importantly, doing so may just demonstrate to the industry that you are ready for the bigs.
