In Igbo traditionality, Chi is very much existential. A person’s Chi is their personal god that guides and protects them. It is the force of life. Notably, Chi and Onye Uwa( One’s Reincarnation) have come to mean one and the same thing and are no longer distinguishable. Although some still make demarcation between the two concepts. A man that feeds and honours his Chi is bound to do excellently well in life. And connection with one’s Chi is connection with Chukwu, the supreme force of existence. Ikenga on the other is the strength of a man’s right hand. It is the symbol of a man’s ability to achieve successes. In the symbolic carving of Ikenga, the man holds a sword in his right hand which he goes to war with. And the human head on the left hand represents the victory that a man has achieved at the end of the war. Importantly, the husks of a ram on head of the carving signify the stubbornness of a man in his quest for victory. All these are symbolic of an Igbo man’s determination to achieve successes. Ikenga is a concept that stands on its own yet is connected to the concept of Chi, in the sense that both guide and strengthen a man through his quest for survival and successes. An individual who has instituted his Chi should as well institute his Ikenga, for both almost work hand in hand. Chi and Ikenga are made most potent through sacrifications.
