Dissociation means we mentally leave our reality. So we may be here physically but our emotions and our mind have gone else-were. Dissociation can be lumped into two categories which are 1. depersonalization: feeling like we are disconnected or detached from ourselves or 2. derealization: feeling disconnected of detached from our surroundings Dissociation usually shows up and is common when we experience trauma such as physical or sexual trauma and we have no way out. It is also common when growing up in an environment where we did not feel safe such as with alcoholic parents or emotionally unavailable parents and in situation where we did not feel our safety needs were being met. In order to survive and be able to move forward our brains numbs our emotions and physical pain sensors and takes us to another place, where we don't feel like the bad situation is really happening to us. This is survival mechanism to help us make it through tat traumatic experience. Although dissociation helps keep us safe during traumatic events, it becomes a defense mechanism that is triggered in other situation including ones that are unrelated to the trauma. So there may be triggers such as feelings, words, sounds, smells, and situations, that trigger our dissociative responce and we may not even be aware of these triggers. all of the sudden we realize that we have gone elsewhere and unsure why. so you might realize you are: 1. Feeling detached from your body or reality - so this is like feeling like your body is not yours everything feels like of foggy and you're not sure whats real 2. You might Feel like you're observing yourself from the outside - this is like having an out of body experience. just looking down at yourself but not really feeling like you have control over your body, thoughts, or words 3. you might feel like your detached from your surroundings- this is where you are in your body but everything around you is sort of 2 dimensional or just not a part of your current life 4. you might Feel emotionally numb - so just not really feeling much at all, no real emotions so you are sort of on auto pilot. when people ask you how you are doing, you might think I don't know because I don't really feel anything. 5. you might Have an altered sense of time- This is were you lose track of time, things might seem to go really really slow or super fast and you might feel like you are stuck in time for a while. 6. you might feel like you are going through a tunnel- so this might feel like everything around you including your thoughts, feelings, situations are are going through a tunnel. everything is sort of floating around you but you don't feel attached to any of it. 7. you might feel weird sensations in your body like tingling or being unable to move. you may feel temporarily paralyzed or you might feel weird sensations in your body especially on your hands and feet 8. you might mentally check out- so this can be like day dreaming, or just staring at someone while they talk but not really hearing or understanding what they are saying. Those are some of the major indicators that you are experiencing dissociation. If you have experienced a trauma or multiple traumas throughout your life, talking to a trauma-informed therapist can help. Make sure the therapist tis trauma informed and trained because traditional talk therapy or traditional CBT will not work for trauma or complex trauma. Trauma therapy might be linger and it should help you establish safety first meaning you work on feeling safe in the therapists office and with that therapist before you dive in to trauma work and processing.
