This was for my fourth year final performance recital exam on 12 November 2025. Performed in Fismer Hall at Stellenbosch University's Conservatorium. Harp - Ricardo Hiniker The Plain of Rhuddlan (Morva Rhuddlan) - John Thomas (1826 – 1913) John Thomas (also known as his bardic name Pencerdd Gwalia, ‘Chief Musician of Wales’) was a Welsh composer and harpist. He studied harp under his father and taught at the Royal Academy of Music. Winning international reputation as a performer, he was appointed as the official harpist to the Queen. He has composed many works and arrangements for the harp, most drawing from Welsh tradition. Based on the traditional Welsh tune, Morva Rhuddlan, the piece is published in a collection of Welsh melodies. The original tune is a mournful melody that is associated with the history of battles fought on the marshland near the town of Rhuddlan in North Wales between the Welsh and Mercians around 795 CE. Composed between 1862 and 1874, the piece follows a theme and variation structure, tastefully linking its mournful tune in each variation.
