Happy New Year 2026. In today’s video, we’re revisiting one of the most important topics in neurology: generalized tonic clonic seizures, also known as grand mal seizures. These seizures often involve sudden loss of consciousness, violent full body jerking, tongue biting, urinary incontinence, and a prolonged postictal state with confusion and fatigue. Many patients have no warning at all. Some experience seizures in their sleep and may not even realize it happened, except for signs like tongue injury. We also discuss absence seizures, sometimes called petit mal seizures, which are more common in children but can occur in adults. These may appear as staring spells, eye fluttering, lip smacking, or brief episodes of altered awareness that can significantly affect school performance and daily life. Finally, we break down seizure medications, including older drugs like Depakote, Dilantin, phenobarbital, and Tegretol versus newer anti seizure medications. Are newer drugs really better? Not always. In some cases, older medications still provide excellent seizure control when newer options fail. If you or a loved one is dealing with epilepsy or unexplained seizure activity, this overview will help you better understand symptoms, risks, and treatment options. Like, comment, and subscribe for more neurology insights.
