Love Unconfined - Luke 4: 24-30 Lent Wk 3, Monday 0:00 Begin 0:55 Reflection 3:28 Hymn A reflection on the Gospel of St Luke 4: 24-30 In Luke 4:24–30, admiration turns quickly to anger. Jesus speaks in His hometown synagogue, and at first the people marvel at His words. But when He reminds them that prophets are rarely accepted in their own country, something shifts. Familiarity becomes resistance. Expectation becomes offence. Nazareth wanted a hometown miracle, a Messiah who belonged to them. Instead, Jesus speaks of Elijah sent to a widow in Zarephath and Elisha cleansing Naaman the Syrian — outsiders, foreigners, the unexpected recipients of God’s mercy. Grace, He suggests, cannot be contained within borders of comfort or familiarity. The reaction is fierce. Those who once praised Him now drive Him to the edge of a cliff. The Word that consoles also confronts. The truth that liberates also unsettles. When God’s mercy refuses to be exclusive, hearts can harden. This Gospel asks us searching questions. Do we welcome Christ only when He fits our expectations? Are we open to a grace that disrupts our assumptions? The Lord who passes through the angry crowd is not defeated; His mission continues. Rejection does not cancel vocation. Luke reminds us that discipleship involves courage — to speak truth with love, to stand firm when misunderstood, and to trust that God’s purpose cannot be silenced. Christ walks steadily through hostility, not with force, but with authority born of obedience to the Father. In every age, the Gospel stretches us beyond comfort. It widens our hearts. It calls us to rejoice when mercy reaches those we least expect. And it asks us to recognise the Holy One even when He stands among us, familiar yet divine. Let us pray. Lord Jesus, You were rejected by those who knew You best. Guard our hearts from closing when Your word challenges us. Free us from narrow vision and fearful pride. Teach us to welcome Your grace wherever it appears, In strangers, in surprises, in uncomfortable truth. When faith costs us reputation or security, Give us courage to remain steadfast. May we never push You to the margins of our lives, But recognise You as Lord in our midst. Lead us beyond resentment into mercy, Beyond fear into trust. Amen. Hymn: Love Unconfined Verse 1 A prophet stood where He was known, Where childhood paths had led; Yet hardened hearts refused His word, And doubt by pride was fed. Chorus Your mercy will not be confined, Nor fenced by fear or claim; You walk through walls our hearts have built And call us by our name. Verse 2 He spoke of grace for distant lands, For strangers far away; And mercy wider than their walls Disturbed their narrow way. Chorus Your mercy will not be confined, Nor fenced by fear or claim; You walk through walls our hearts have built And call us by our name. Verse 3 They drove Him to the mountain’s edge, With anger in their cry; Yet calm He walked through hate and threat — His hour not yet to die. Chorus Your mercy will not be confined, Nor fenced by fear or claim; You walk through walls our hearts have built And call us by our name. Verse 4 O Christ, when truth unsettles us, And pride would have its say, Break open still our guarded hearts And lead us in Your way. Chorus Your mercy will not be confined, Nor fenced by fear or claim; You walk through walls our hearts have built And call us by our name. Your mercy will not be confined, Nor fenced by fear or claim; You walk through walls our hearts have built And call us by our name.
