Born in New York and enlisting for what would become a 30 year career of service to his country, Sgt John Denny would be amongst a patrol of the 9th Cavalry, a "Buffalo Soldier" cavalry regiment sent to cut off and return a band of Apache back to their reservation, not realizing the escape itself was actually the opening to a full scale conflict, the patrol would be ambushed deep in the Las Animas canyon, where tight sides and steep walls favored the Apache ambushers with elevation and rock cover. Sgt John Denny, despite a fall back order being in place, would rush selflessly into open canyon floor under fire to retrieve a wounded trooper, and return him to friendly lines as they retreated under the heavy smoke of their rifles. Not being hit himself, both men would live to fight another day, and the actions would quickly be noticed up the command chain. Sgt Denny would go on to serve a full 30 years in the US Cavalry, eventually making First Sergeant, the highest rank available to him at the time. Around 3,500 Black Americans would serve in only 2, Black cavalry units formed by the US Army, the 9th, and 10th Cavalry. Despite their small numbers, they became known across both the Army as well as to their enemies on the field (in fact it is much agreed on that the term Buffalo Soldier is in fact given to them by the Apache themselves) for their skills and tenacity in battle, and abilities to get things done. With only 2 units of Black-Only American cavalry units, it MUST be noted here that a staggering TWENTY-THREE , MEDAL OF HONOR RECIEPIENTS, will emerge throughout their service across multiple campaigns, wars and conflicts including most every Indian wars campaign, and the Spanish-American war.
