In this session, the AI Planetary Justice Alliance breaks down what it really takes to train an AI model beyond the “cloud” narrative. From minerals and GPUs to data centres, energy, water use, land occupation, and labour, the talk explores AI model training through a planetary justice lens, connecting social and environmental costs across the global supply chain. Participants also examine real-world concerns like data work and content moderation, hidden labour, bias and discrimination in training data, and the urgent need for accountability in how AI is built and deployed. The session concludes with an interactive exercise to map impact indicators and ask better questions about AI’s true footprint.
