“Who is America at 250? Artists’ Books on the State of Democracy Artist highlight: “Tipping Point”, Art Hazelwood and Asa Nakata (2021) The artist book “Tipping Point” uses bold imagery and biting satire to confront systems of power. Housed in a slipcase, the book's structure was designed by Asa Nakata; the key "aha!" moment at the end features a pull tab activating a movable guillotine blade, which decapitates a figure representing capitalism. Created just before the pandemic, “Tipping Point” speaks directly to the exhibition's themes of social injustice and the voice of the people. Hazelwood's visuals—silkscreened in eye-popping color—present moneybag-headed capitalists, the one-eyed pyramid seen on dollar bills, and Klan masks representing what he calls "destructive powers arrayed against the people and the planet." Woven throughout with San Francisco landmarks like the Hibernia Bank and the Painted Ladies of Alamo Square, “Tipping Point” begins as an object lesson in the rapaciousness of capitalism and builds toward a message of hope and transformation. Organized by San Francisco Center for the Book, “Who is America at 250?” runs through March 8, 2026. The exhibition will then travel to the Boston Athenaeum and Minnesota Center for Book Arts.
