Many top students are searching for ways to stand out from the crowd and be less reliant on high stats when applying to highly competitive universities. There are definitely ways for students to accomplish this in less time than you might think. The best way for motivated students to stand out is by doing something completely unique versus other applicants to top schools, and the way to do that is with a so-called Personal Interest Project aka a Community Impact Project aka a Passion Project. My best recommendation is to step outside the high school ecosystem to define your own unique project, based on a proven model of partnering with an established community organization. This does not need to be an intimidating or overwhelming project for any student. Instead, a Personal Interest Project can be a way to work with an organization already in place to serve the community around your selected interest. These organizations exist across the country in areas such as non-profits, government agencies, K12 and university-based programs, and healthcare. Some topics may include the creation, use, preservation, or improvement of government owned parks and preservations (plants, signage, bench areas), native plants (regional ecosystem, educating the public), food gardens (K12, universities), food banks, public art, music, visual arts, serving youth via special-interest micro-educational programs (debate, artistic, dance, language, history, robotics), assisting with health concerns and facilities for a very specific population, and many, many more. Personal projects allow you to make an impact on the community, as well as your own journey to become an educated, impactful young adult and college student. And that's what gets the attention of Admissions Officers. I’m Susan from Type A Essays, and I've helped hundreds of students get into competitive universities by crafting powerful & persuasive profiles for the Common App & UC App. I bring best practices from 20-years in Silicon Valley semiconductor sales and business development, as well as a lifetime of volunteering, reading, and travel. I'm also a parent of two in T20 programs. My goal is to give students free resources to help them generate opportunities, and optimize their outcomes in the competitive college apps process.
