Even highly accomplished high school students can struggle to create a clear and cohesive Common Application profile and personal statement. It can be hard to categorize many different accomplishments from their academic and extra-curricular lives into distinct buckets that pack a punch. Too often students rely on the prestige of high stats and awards or other achievements without creating a compelling narrative that ties their profile together. It is imperative that students focus their essay writing on just a few distinct messages that tell a simple story of who they are and why the Admissions Officer should care. In this video I explain the "3 Bucket Rule" aka the "3 Triangle Rule," which essentially means that students will be smart to select 3 key nouns, verbs, or very short phrases to provide the Readers Digest version of themselves to the reader. This shorthand summary of your profile gives critical context to the reader, allowing them to glide through your personal statement while understanding the highlights reel of what makes you interesting as an applicant. I’m Susan from Type A Essays, and I've helped hundreds of students get into competitive universities by crafting powerful & persuasive profiles for the Common App & UC App. I bring best practices from 20-years in Silicon Valley semiconductor sales and business development, as well as a lifetime of volunteering, reading, and travel. I'm also a parent of two in T20 programs. My goal is to give students the free tools to optimize their outcomes in the competitive college apps process. QUESTIONS? Drop a comment below for me!
