What's the Purpose of the Common App Personal Statement? | 2 Guideposts for Students' Essay Writing

Are you wondering if your Common App Personal Statement is meant to do any of the following? 1) Describe your role in a primary high school activity? 2) Share a deeply emotional story about your life experience? 3) Shock and awe the reader with amazing writing skills? 4) Draft a killer "hook" and go from there? While each of the above can work for your personal statement, they are simply not looking at the essay from an appropriately big picture point of view. Instead, I encourage students to keep the following two simple rules in mind when drafting a personal statement: 1) Demonstrate you are a worthy (compelling, talented) candidate for the universities to which you're applying, and 2) Show how you are differentiated versus similarly talented peers who are also applying to those schools, and how you will add unique value to the school. Students who keep these important guideposts in mind when drafting or outlining ideas for their essays will be able to make easier, faster decisions on their thesis, point of view, and what stories, evidence, and messages to share in those 650-words. For every sentence you write, ask yourself, do these words help establish that I'm a credible candidate for this school? Do they demonstrate a unique talent, accomplishment, insight, goal or point-of-view that supports my target school's mission and values? If your words do not do either of these things, delete them and rewrite. Make your words count toward the big picture goals of the personal statement.
