MALIBU — On Saturday, April 5, 2025, Santa Monica Closeup traveled from Pacific Palisades to Malibu to document ongoing recovery efforts along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), where engineers, utility crews, and fire recovery teams continue working to restore vital infrastructure after the devastating Palisades Fire. As part of Phase Two of the federal recovery mission, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) oversaw the demolition of a fire-ravaged home on the Malibu coastline. Crews used a large excavator to tear down the structure, spraying water to control ash and dust as debris was cleared from the property. USACE continues removing hazardous debris and damaged vegetation across the region. Property owners have submitted Right of Entry forms to allow federal crews access, with officials estimating roughly 4.5 million tons of debris will be cleared in the coming months. Strict access controls remain in place along PCH, with National Guard troops, LAPD, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies, and CHP manning checkpoints. CHP is enforcing a 25-mph speed limit, allowing only first responders, authorized personnel, and select press members into the recovery zone. Residents and contractors must obtain special entry passes for access. With PCH still closed to the general public, the highway has become a secured recovery corridor, essential for transporting equipment and restoring power, water, and gas services to Malibu and neighboring communities. The Palisades Fire, which began on January 7, 2025, burned over 23,000 acres and destroyed nearly 7,000 structures before containment on January 31.
