To Be or Not To Be…Centralized: What is the Question?

In 2006, Intermountain Health opened its Central Laboratory in greater Salt Lake City to simplify logistics, expand the test menu, facilitate the implementation of laboratory automation, extend the hours of operation, improve turnaround times, and create capacity for future growth. Through vignettes that illustrate some of the pitfalls, failures, and successes of laboratory centralization and decentralization, this lecture will emphasize the importance of asking better questions to obtain better information for planning, implementation, and operations. After viewing this lecture, participants should be able to: 1. Contrast the advantages and disadvantages of laboratory centralization versus decentralization. 2. Critically evaluate scenarios for centralization or decentralization of testing. 3. Identify potential pitfalls of implementation of centralized testing.
