(31 Dec 2000) English/Nat XFA An Israeli couple were killed and their children injured in a shooting attack in the West Bank on Sunday. The victims were in a car that was fired upon as it passed near the Jewish settlement of Ofra north of Ramallah in the West Bank, an Israeli army spokesman said. The car, travelling north from Jerusalem, came under fire, flipped over and fell into a ravine after the driver was killed. His wife also died and five children were injured, one seriously, the army said. The dead man has been named as Binyamin Zeev Kahane, the son of the late extremist rabbi, Meir Kahane. Meir Kahane advocated expelling Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip and founded the Ultra-nationalist group Kach. He was assassinated in New York in 1990. Binyamin Kahane lived in the West Bank settlement of Tapuah and ran a religious school advocating the extremist policies of his father. Speaking to reporters after his father's death in 1995 Kahane said the government's refusal to erect a memorial to his father was hypocrisy. SOUNDBITE: (English) "If they're not going to let us make a memorial for my father, that means that all of this ceremony that they're making for Rabin is hypocrisy. SUPER CAPTION: Binyamin Kahane, Right Wing Activist The shooting comes a day after militant followers of Yasser Arafat called for increased violence against Israel. Arafat's Fatah movement is calling for "utter rejection" of peace proposals made by President Clinton. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said on Israel radio the shooting was a "grave attack" but he didn't say if Israel would retaliate in any specific way. Hours after the attack, a senior member of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction was shot to death near his home in the West Bank town of Tulkarem. The Israeli army had no immediate comment, but Palestinian sources claimed it was an assassination. The dead man, Thabet Thabet, was the secretary-general of Fatah in the Tulkarem area. Three months of hostilities have killed almost 350 people, most of them Palestinians.
