Wichita Postcard Club Hold to Light Postcards by Demaris Swint

Hold to Light Postcards Speaker: Demaris Swint The speaker at the January 8 Wichita Postcard club monthly meeting was Demaris Swint.  She spoke primarily about HTL or Hold to Light Postcards. Hold to light postcards are those that when held up to a strong light, another scene appears.  This topic is something that Demaris became fascinated with early on when she started going to postcard shows.  It was just one of those events, where she attended a show where a major collection of these cards were being offered for sale.  By going through all of the cards, and probably encouraged by the dealer who had them for sale, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the variety and types of this novelty postcard, through time.  Each time that dealer would have attended another show, more and more of the HTL’s would have been sold, and lucky for Demaris, she was able to see the collection before it was broken up.  She did not realize at the time, that this was like viewing a textbook that was never written.  We are excited to have Demaris show from her extensive collection and we are pleased with her skills at scanning and taking pictures of the cards held in front of a light, so that they do show all of the HTL aspects, and make a whole new audience SMILE again. Lastly, Demaris is the one-woman show behind continuing the National Postcard Week celebration during the first full week of May each year.  And too, she is the powerhouse behind Postcrossing too…both of these topics will make excellent programs for another time.
