Best viewed in 1080p HD The 18th-21st of September saw the Severn Valley Railway host their annual "Autumn Steam Gala", this year marking their 60th Anniversary with an intensive timetable which offered a varied mix of full-length, local & goods workings, as well as the return of overnight running. The event featured a stunning line-up of four visiting locomotives alongside the line's resident fleet, each making their first ever visits to the SVR! 35006 'Peninsular & Oriental S.N. Co' (built in 1941 at the SR's Eastleigh Works) would serve as one of the highlights of the gala, its visit marking the first ever appearance of a SR 'Merchant Navy' Pacific on SVR metals. The 'Bulleid' would appear on a variety of Southern 'Boat Train' recreations, including the "Cunarder" as seen in this coverage. Another star of the show was 73082 'Camelot', a BR Standard 5MT built in 1955 - with this year marking the loco's 70th anniversary! The BR 5MT spent its entire working life on BR's Southern Region, working here until 1966 when it was withdrawn and sent to Barry Scrapyard - the loco was saved for preservation in the late 1970s by the 73082 Camelot Locomotive Society, who still own & maintain it to this day. An interesting addition to the gala was RSH Austerity 0-6-0ST NCB No. 49, visiting from the Tanfield Railway. Built to a Hunslet design in 1943 for the War Department, it spent most of its working life in industrial service, latterly being bought by the National Coal Board for use at their Backworth Colliery in Northumberland. Remaining in use with the NCB well into the 1970s, it was subsequently preserved by the Stephenson & Hawthorn Locomotive Trust. Completing the guest line-up was LMS Fowler 3F 0-6-0T No. 47298 (built in 1924), hired in from the East Lancashire Railway. Both tank engines were put to work on a range of local passenger & goods trips on each day. The event also marked the return of GWR Ex-Port Talbot 0-6-0ST No. 813 following several years out of traffic; the loco was outshopped in NCB livery as Backworth Unit No. 11 for the first time in preservation, thus enabling the SVR to host a rare pairing of two ex-NCB locos from the same colliery! Another SVR stalwart in operation was 7802 'Bradley Manor', also still fresh from overhaul, having been launched during the Spring Steam Gala earlier this year. Rounding off the resident line-up for this year's coverage was BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 No. 75069 - although I'd also planned a shot of 7714, this sadly failed to materialise. 4930 'Hagley Hall' and LMS Stanier Mogul No. 13268 were also in use during the gala, although during the main event they were kept as motive power for the overnight services, hence they also don't feature on this occasion. This video showcases footage taken during the Friday and Sunday of the event, filmed from a range of lineside spots and featuring a wonderful array of locos & stock on show throughout - including some cracking displays from each of the four visitors. The personal highlight was undoubtedly getting to see 73082 'Camelot' accelerating away from Northwood Halt with the rake of LNER Teaks - I'd waited a very long time to see a BR Standard 5, so I was chuffed to bits to have finally ticked that box!
