AT Day 23: Fresh Snow & Time for Spikes | Stecoah Gap to Cable Gap Shelter | HoggCountry Fresh off a zero day, we were back on the trail at Stecoah Gap [00:23]. We crossed the highway construction site and started the morning push. It was a beautiful but freezing start—temperatures were down around 17 degrees with fresh snow on the ground [01:09]. That first climb out of the gap was a decent one, sneaking up on you before hammering down, though thankfully it actually had a few rare switchbacks [02:57]. After a quick break to shed some layers at the top [03:38] and linking up near Brown Fork Shelter [04:47], we pushed across the ridgeline with some great views of Rocky Top [07:27]. As we started heading downhill, the descents got incredibly icy and slippery. After carrying them for nearly 200 miles, it was finally time to bust out the microspikes to safely navigate the steep, frozen rocks [10:21]. We closed out our 10-ish mile day rolling into Cable Gap Shelter [14:26]. It’s a really cool, old-school shelter with a good water source nearby [15:25]. A solid, freezing day of hiking in North Carolina's finest!
