Learn to Read Biblical Hebrew | Season 3 Genesis 1:3 - 4a - Reading & Interpretation ~ Following the bold introduction of darkness and chaos in verse 2, in verse 3 we notice a deliberate response in the Creation narrative of God bringing Light to forefront. Verse 3 reads, "And Elohim said: Light! Exist! And light existed." (emphasis added) In this short verse we are introduced to the "JUSSIVE" verbal form - a third-person instruction / command similar to the "IMPERATIVE" verbal form that we will explore later. The 'jussive' command "YEHI" (יהי) is derived from the root verb "HAYAH" (היה) which means to be/exist" or "he existed". Then followed by the noun "OR" ("light") it sets the stage for the importance of God's opening words. As if nothing takes pre-eminence in the Creation story other than "light"! And following the instruction for light to 'come to be' - we see light obeying God, and simply showing up. Again, the same 'jussive' verbal form "YEHI" (יהי). The first part of verse 4 introduces God's observation: His evaluation of light and declaring it good! In Hebrew the word for "good" ("TOV") literally means... "it works!" or "it has purpose!" Genesis 1:3 and 1:4 therefore emphasize God's creative power and also highlight God's role as the ultimate evaluator, with His formidable assessment that the light is good - light works! - setting a foundational pattern for the rest of the creation account in Genesis 1.
