Boy oh boy is there a lot of “well it depends…” in this conversation. Jim Tam started us off by saying that cheating only really matters if there is something important on the line. His example was golf. Most people don’t play strictly by the rules. Call it fudging, taking a mulligan or whatever. Unless there is money on the line, very few will call you out. He likes to assume they don’t know the rules and don’t realize they are cheating (I think that is a pretty generous assumption). Later in the conversation he pointed out that in business, there are A LOT of things that are gray. Not really completely on the up and up but also pretty accepted (listen to the conversation to hear his example). Catarina von Maydell agreed that intentions and impact matter. She believes cheating is complex and broke down responding into two pieces – what you do in the moment and longer term how do we make sure it doesn’t happen again. She also suggested several reasons why someone might cheat. Tara Farajian is a licensed clinical social worker and provides individual therapy so she looked at this through the lens of infidelity in a relationship. If a client discloses something like that to her, she is bound by patient confidentiality (as am I) and has to hold a space of no judgement. For me, I’m always curious when I client shares infidelity. However, I was very black and white about cheating when I played volleyball. We either played by the rules or we didn’t keep score. There was no other option. I asked the panel what they would do if they knew someone was funneling money (fraud) from a business that wasn’t taking money out of their pocket. Is there a difference between cheating and crime? It’s easy to claim perfect integrity in the abstract. In the real world, it is messy. What would you do?
