Lisa McDonald started us off by talking about how the word “but” draws a line in any communication. Anything that comes before it, they likely didn’t actually mean. Listen for the truth after the “but.” On the other hand, Jeff Glauser loves a good debate (we did a Quick Hits about what makes something a “good” debate). He wants to know where people disagree with him so “yeah but…” just means there is more debate to be had. For Kim Groshek it depends. When someone says “Yeah but” to her, she gets curious. For me, “yes, but” is my least favorite English saying. What I hear is, “I agree with you and I’m going to go ahead and disagree with you.” That said, the word “but” does have a place in communication.
