Pollinators of paradise: Building a thriving and sustainable beekeeping industry in the Pacific

Beekeeping has a long history in many parts of the world, but its potential in the Pacific region is just beginning to be explored. However, the development of the beekeeping industry is not without its challenges. Limited nectar flow, cyclones, climate change, pests, diseases, and the unavailability of Pacific-specific training materials all impact the health and productivity of beekeeping and bee colonies. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been working with Pacific beekeepers to overcome these challenges. In collaboration with the Fiji Beekeeper Association, FAO organized the first-ever regional training on sustainable beekeeping in 2022 to help Pacific beekeepers thrive while preserving the region's biodiversity.
