Opening in 2024 at Drayton Manor, there's more to this one of a kind Intamin family coaster than meets the eye. Gold Rush features a 17-metre tall lift hill and a hidden tyre propelled launch, but thanks to cleverly positioned switch tracks there's a twist - both of these elements can be experienced backwards! This means that despite a relatively modest track length of just 600 metres, the ride experience is extended to about two minutes with both forwards and backwards sections. Whilst Gold Rush can operate two different cycles depending on the direction of travel on the lift hill, as of 2025 the ride is sadly only operating just one cycle - with only one train too. In this mode, the 24-passenger trains ascend the lift hill to reach the coaster's highest point before travelling through the ride's two large airtime hills and stopping in the ride's launch shed. Riders are then launched backwards into an S-curve leading back to the lift hill where the ride changes direction again, going back through the S-curve, with a rolling tyre launch back through the launch shed, which leads the final sequence of turns and the final brake run. Following the acquisition of Drayton Manor by the Looping Group, Gold Rush is part of a new wave of changes to improve the park's offerings to family audiences. The ride occupies the former plot of Apocalypse, a legendary Intamin 2nd generation freefall tower which was the first to place riders in the stand-up position. At the other end of the park, in Gold Rush's opening year saw Shockwave rethemed to "The Wave" with its stand-up train replaced with a more conventional sit-down ride vehicle from ART engineering. Did you know that this ride is not the only Gold-mining themed coaster to have operated at Drayton Manor? Between 1995 and 2004, the park was also home to Klondike Gold Mine, a looping Pinfari ZL42 model that can still be found operating in Chile.
