Ep. 84: Artistic Honesty & Truth in Art | A Discussion with Jeremy Page

In this episode, Brandon Polite (Knox College | he/him) talks with Jeremy Page (University of Oxford | he/him) about his work on artistic honesty—what it is, when it matters, and why it can be so hard to define. Our conversation traces the development of Page’s account across different artistic media, from literature and stand-up comedy to documentary film and pop music. We begin by examining the limitations of the "orthodox" view of artistic honesty, which simply defines it as not lying. Page argues that this doesn’t capture the full evaluative force of the term as critics use it in practice. We next move on to consider a more ambitious model: the “authentic self-expression” view. Here, artistic honesty involves deep, introspective work in which artists clarify their underlying emotional perspective and successfully express that in their work. While this model better explains the honorific use of “honesty” in artistic evaluation, it also raises concerns about access and relevance: critics and audiences often lack insight into an artist’s psychology, and such a focus may distract from evaluating the artwork itself. From there, we turn to Page’s preferred alternative: the “communicative” account. Rather than focusing on the artist’s internal process, this view treats artistic honesty as a communicative achievement—akin to an honest conversation—where the artwork confronts emotionally or epistemically difficult truths in a way that resonates with its audience. We explore how this idea plays out in memoir, documentary, and fiction, with examples ranging from Rachel Cusk to Joshua Oppenheimer and Toni Morrison. This leads us to discuss stand-up comedy as a particularly revealing case, focusing on the controversy surrounding Hasan Minhaj’s fabricated stories. Page reflects on why these distortions—though defended by Minhaj as vehicles for conveying deeper truths—ultimately undermine the loftier goals of his work, especially when the central story is fabricated and the performance centers the comedian’s personal heroism. We then zoom out to consider how norms of honesty vary across genres and traditions. We explore why some distortions are acceptable in comedy (e.g., tweaking the timing of an anecdote) while others (e.g., inventing a trauma that never occurred) cross a line. They contrast Minhaj’s work with that of comedians like Mike Birbiglia, Tig Notaro, and Patton Oswalt, who build their acts around real personal struggles and deliver material that resonates more deeply because of it. In the final stretch of the conversation, we discuss whether artistic honesty is always a good-making feature in art. Page maintains that while superficial works—like pop songs, action movies, and sitcoms—can be very good on their own terms, in certain genres and artistic projects where the aim is to confront difficult subject matter, achieving artistic honesty is a genuine artistic virtue. He connects this view to his broader interest in aesthetic cognitivism and the possibility of ranking artworks by the kinds of understanding they offer—what he calls “intelligible beauty.” We close with reflections on the risks of elitism in such ranking systems and the importance of not collapsing into relativism. Page notes the importance of resisting both snobbery and a flattening of all artistic value. He suggests that we can—and should—find a defensible middle ground, one that preserves the idea that some artworks are more worthy of our attention because of the truths they help us confront and the clarity they offer about ourselves and our world.
