Jan 27, 2026 The 3rd Street railroad crossing here in Davis, California on the CFNR West Valley Sub but the signals and functions are maintained and owned by the Union Pacific Railroad due to the Davis Wye being part of UPRR's control. This crossing is one crossing like some that do not have a time out feature or just doesn't work and tied to that an permanent early activation. Another crossing I know of that is like this is Kilgore Rd on the SACRT light rail. The only way crossings like this time out is if the train backs up away from the crossing and that's if it does time out as sometimes trains have to back all the way out the circuit then it'll time out. For railfanning at crossings, these are one of the most annoying crossings to film. For drivers, these kinds of crossings that function like this cause a major hold up in traffic, if a train stops before the crossing, it'll keep the crossing gates down which normally, crossings would time out and the gates would rise up. What caused this, the freight train stalled pulling a long line of cars out the West Pass track of the UP Martinez Sub around the East leg wye corner. The train crew had to get permission from the UP to reverse the train back out onto the UP pass track of the Martinez Sub and then pull forward back onto the CFNR which helped pull the cars finally which was the second activation. I missed the 2nd activation when the train pulled forward due to the fact they immediately pulled forward after shoving back as I had assumed they would call the UP again but this wasn't the case thus I missed the activation. I filmed this crossing again later this day when they had to go get their 2nd cut of cars anyway.
