“So it's really hard to count really, how many were horrifically killed. Many unrecognisable.” Dr Morgan McMonagle, trauma and vascular surgeon who had worked at Nasser Hospital in Gaza, recounts his experiences treating injured children and families when Israel first violated the ceasefire on 18 March, during which they spent “the first 20 minutes pronouncing people dead, of which most of them were children”. During the BBC interview, Dr McMonagle said the mortuary was at capacity with bodies and body parts lying on the floor that will “never be claimed”, adding that even if they are identifiable, often family members are also dead and the bodies, including those of children, are buried “unmarked” in mass graves. Dr McMonagle also described walking through the ICU unit during lunchtime where “every single bed was full”, only to return in the evening to find it half empty “because they had all died”.
