The Book of Proverbs is WISDOM passed on from ONE GENERATION to the NEXT through RELATIONSHIP. 1. God IMPARTS wisdom from OLD to YOUNG through the NATURAL FAMILY. Ephesians 6:4 (ESV) Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Titus 2:3–5 (ESV) Older women… are to teach what is good, 4 and so train the young women… 2. God IMPARTS wisdom from OLD to YOUNG through the SPIRITUAL FAMILY. 1 Timothy 1:18 (ESV) This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child.. 1 Timothy 1:2 (ESV) To Timothy my true child in faith… The FIVE APTITUDES of the WISE: Wise people: 1. KNOW the SCRIPTURES through RELATIONSHIP. Proverbs 3:1–2 (ESV) My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, 2 for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. Proverbs 13:20 (ESV) Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. 1 Corinthians 2:6 (ESV) among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. 2 Timothy 3:14–15 (ESV) But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Question: Do I have a spiritual FATHER/MOTHER? 2. KNOW God’s SALVATION intimately. Proverbs 3:3 (ESV) Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. Exodus 34:6 (ESV) “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, Two pictures of our salvation: ADOPTION and MARRIAGE Isaiah 49:15–16 (ESV) “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. 16 Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands Matthew 19:6 (ESV) What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” Proverbs 3:4 (ESV) So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. Wise People: 3. KNOW their own FOOLISHNESS daily. Proverbs 3:5 (ESV) Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him Proverbs 3:7 (ESV) Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. The Paradox of Proverbs: If you don’t KNOW you’re a FOOL, you’re a FOOL. Wise People: 4. KNOW their SOURCE is God. Proverbs 3:9 (ESV) Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; God is FIRST when He’s FIRST FINANCIALLY. Proverbs 3:10 (ESV) then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. Wise People: 5. Know DISCIPLINE is a GOOD THING. Proverbs 3:11–12 (ESV) My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, 12 for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. Psalm 119:71 (ESV) It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes. — "We are here for those who are not yet here."
