Oxide Time: 1:27:52 My Time: 1:23:08 Full playlist: • CTR Nitro-Fueled — Nitros Oxide Time Trials If you're just starting the Time Trials, and in order, you're probably beating your head against the wall with this one. Be forewarned: the first four tracks are some of the most punishing in the game by a rather wide margin. That said, I still recommend you do them in order because the skills you'll acquire in beating them will make the later trials go down much easier. For Crash Cove there are three keys to victory. The first is using speed class. You may have taken a shine to acceleration class during Adventure mode and prefer to stick with what you know. The sooner you abandon this mindset, the sooner you'll surpass several of these trials. Playing through Adventure mode, I used accel almost exclusively, so naturally this is what I used when diving into time trial mode. I then spent hours failing both Crash Cove and Mystery Caves. After better players insisted I switch to speed class, I did, and I knocked these two out within a handful of attempts. I was shocked: I had vastly underestimated how much of a difference class type can make. So don't make the same mistake I did. It will take a bit of an adjustment if you are someone who only uses acceleration or handling classes, but the payoff is absolutely worth it because speed class simply makes some of these Oxide times easier, full stop. Of course, some tracks are better suited to the other class types, and I'll note as much below those videos. The second key to victory here is mastering the shortcut after the first ramp. You want to take the shortcut as fast as possible so you have enough jump height for a boost landing when you land up there. Try going off the left side of the lip for maximum jump height. Provided you have enough speed, you can get another boost landing when jumping down to the bridge as you go into your next power slide. You can gain an additional boost landing by jumping off to the left of the bridge just before the end like I do. The third tip is essential to the mechanics of this game and to competing at higher levels. And that is Sacred Fire (SF). You can find plenty of tutorials out there on this, but you'll know you have it when you see big, bright yellow-orange flame coming out of your exhaust. You will be moving at higher speed when this type of flame is present, so naturally when you have it you want to keep it going as long as possible. The two boost pads at the end of each lap in Crash Cove give you SF, and the key to mastering this track is extending it as long as you can. You maintain it by chaining together 'Perfect' power slides and boost landings. When you get really proficient at this, you'll be able to maintain it around the first corner heading toward the ramp and the shortcut. Put simply, the longer you retain SF, the better your lap times will be. Practice it, master it. Not only will it give you a leg up on Oxide here, it will make later trials a relative breeze.
