Wayne Shorter (August 25, 1933 – March 2, 2023) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Shorter played with Horace Silver and Maynard Ferguson before joining Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1959. From 1964 to 1969, he was a member of Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, alongside Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. With keyboardist Joe Zawinul, whom he had met at Davis's, and Czech bassist Miroslav Vitouš, he founded the legendary jazz-rock group Weather Report in 1970. Until 1968, Shorter had played only tenor saxophone, but in those years he switched to soprano saxophone and lyricon. After the breakup of Weather Report in 1985, Shorter started a solo career. He accompanied Carlos Santana and the Rolling Stones on tour and played on albums by Joni Mitchell and Aja of Steely Dan. From 2000, he led a highly regarded quartet with pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade, with whom he recorded the albums Footprints Live and Beyond the Sound Barrier. Shorter was not only known for his virtuosity on the saxophone, but also for his compositions and improvisations. On 21 June 2007, Shorter was awarded the Concertgebouw Jazz Award 2007 in Amsterdam. In 2017, he was awarded the Polar Music Prize. He has received a total of twelve Grammy Awards. Shorter was 89 years old. Welcome to the official North Sea Jazz Archive!
